Sometimes the best decisions come about quite unexpectedly. We are Maike, Thomas and Arik, and today we spend as much time as possible in our little holiday home in the heart of Småland. When we look out over the forests in the morning, enjoy the quiet, or simply sit on the terrace, it often feels as if this place has always been part of our lives.
But it all actually began many years earlier.
How our connection to Sweden began
Our connection to Sweden has stayed with us for a long time. Thomas in particular has been closely tied to the country since his youth. Back then, he spent many summers in Sweden with friends whose family owned a house there. Early on, he came to know Swedish nature, the lakes, the forests, and above all that special calm you rarely find in Germany anymore.
Over the years, Sweden remained a place we always loved to return to.
During our trips together, it quickly became clear that it wasn't just the landscape that captivated us, but above all the Swedish way of life. So much here feels more relaxed, more natural, and less hectic. People are friendly and easygoing, often pragmatic, without the constant pursuit of perfection you know from Germany.
It was exactly this relaxed attitude that appealed to us more and more.
Why we fell in love with Småland
The more often we travelled to Sweden, the stronger the wish grew for our own little retreat in the middle of nature.
We love the peace, the forests, the countless lakes, and that sense of freedom you feel almost everywhere here. Even though Sweden is roughly the same size as Germany, only about a tenth as many people live here. You notice that immediately.
Anyone looking for peace and quiet will truly still find it here.
Even small roads often stretch for miles through forests, past lakes, or through small villages where time sometimes seems to move a little slower. For us, that was always the biggest contrast to the often hectic everyday life in Germany.
We also love the Swedish mentality. Things are allowed to be simpler here, more pragmatic and less complicated. Not everything has to be perfect down to the last detail — and that's exactly what makes life here feel more pleasant and relaxed for us.
The search for a holiday home in Sweden
In 2021, we finally decided to actively start looking for a holiday home in Sweden.
We quickly knew that we didn't want a place in a touristy area, but a house in the middle of nature, quietly located, surrounded by forests and lakes, yet still easily reachable from Trelleborg. A distance of around three to five hours' drive seemed ideal to us.
For many months we searched for suitable houses, looked at different regions, and spent a lot of time comparing listings.
And then, rather by chance, came Målerås.
Our way to Målerås
Right in the middle of the beautiful Kingdom of Crystal in Småland, we finally discovered this house on a Swedish estate agent's website and immediately fell in love with the photos and the special atmosphere.
The house sits quietly at the edge of the forest, surrounded by nature, with only a few neighbours nearby. This was exactly how we had pictured our own little piece of Sweden.
Looking back, our decision at the time was probably quite spontaneous: we actually bought the house without ever viewing it in person, through a Swedish SMS bidding process.
Still, from the very first moment, we had the feeling that it was exactly right.
And that feeling has stayed with us to this day.
A place to arrive and breathe
Over the past few years, our holiday home has increasingly become a place where we consciously slow down.
Here we spend time in nature, discover new places in Småland, enjoy long summer evenings on the terrace, or spontaneously drive to one of the many lakes nearby. We especially love that you can simply set off, drive or walk, without needing any plans.
The peace you experience in Målerås feels special to us every single time.
This is exactly the feeling we want to share with our guests today.
Our holiday home isn't meant to be a perfect luxury retreat, but a place to feel at home. A place where you can switch off, breathe, and simply live a little slower for a while.
